We Go to a Car Show, and Find a Delicious Dessert...

On Saturday, I convinced Chris to go with me to the Motor Expo in Agira, Sicily.  It was a sunny day, a nice day for a ride, so she agreed.  Agira is about an hour and a half from Taormina, and it turned out to be a beautiful drive, through endless groves of orange and lemon trees, with constant views of snow-capped Mt. Etna.  Here's the flier for the show.....

At the Agira exit of the Autostrada, a man was handing out fliers for his business.... La Bottega delle Cassatelle.  Turns out cassatelle are a dessert pastry particular to Agira.  We drove past the Bottega on the way to the Motor Expo, and made a mental note to stop on the way back.  Here is a photo of Agira, taken from the entrance to the show.....

I expected the show to have a lot of antique cars along with a swap meet, and as it turns out it was a large swap meet with a few cars.  There were more spare parts for Fiats and Vespa scooters than you could imagine.  Here's the entrance to the show, which thankfully was free, and a few photos of the various booths.....

Here is a photo of the beautiful countryside around Agira, taken between two of the booths.....

We talked with the folks at the Fiat 500 Club of Sicily booth.  The club is based in Catania.  They were very friendly, gave us their card, and asked that we call them when we stay in Catania over Easter weekend. Who knows what adventure will arise from that.... !

Here are a couple of the vintage and interesting cars we saw at the show.....including a red Corvette..... a car you don't expect to see here.....

And after seeing this great Fiat 500 bathroom sink on the internet, we were wondering if these guys were planning to make one......

After leaving the show we decided we needed to stop at the Bottega delle Cassatelle to investigate. These special pastries are made with chickpea flour and dried lemon zest, and coated with powdered sugar. The most particular ones are filled with a mixture of cocoa and almond paste.  Other fillings include pistachio cream, ricotta, etc.  And yes, they are delicious.....

We bought some for us, and took a few to Paola, the housekeeper at the Lemon Tree, who seemed genuinely happy to receive them.

So an outing to a car show, which turned out to be a swap meet, ended with a delicious dessert.....

  1. Let me start out by saying that I have always had a strong desire to visit the Mediterranean but after reading this post and seeing the pictures, I’m going to be booking a vacation for sure! The cars look absolutely amazing. Especially set against the beautiful Italian countryside. I do not think I could be more jealous of your adventures.
